Construction Management Concentrations

In addition to completing all of the following construction management degree requirements, students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree must also select one of the six concentrations listed below and complete all courses listed for that concentration on the corresponding curriculum flow chart.

General Contracting Construction Managers are responsible for the overall construction, improvement, or renovation project under contract and manage all the sub-contractors on a project. Land Development Land Developers oversee the procurement of property and plan the specific use of a property. They also evaluate land for future development considering property characteristics, economic trends, and zoning ordinances. Specialty Construction Specialty Construction Managers oversee commercial mechanical, electrical, and plumbing projects. Heavy Construction Heavy Construction refers to projects that do not include buildings, such as water treatment facilities, roads, bridges, tunnels, and other transportation systems. These are often public works projects with governmental agencies or part of large private development projects. Facility Management Facility Management is about supporting people where they live, work, shop, and play. Facility managers operate office buildings, shopping malls, stadiums, concert halls universities, factories, airports, churches, and hotels. Managers improve building occupants’ quality of life, promote sustainability, innovate new systems and processes to increase productivity, and integrate technology to improve businesses and communities . Residential Concentration A residential contractor engages in the construction and renovation of residential projects or manages them from start to finish. They would also be the one to ensure permits and supervise contractors and laborers. Residential contractors enlist specialty subcontractors in areas like electrical and plumbing and ensure that all subcontractors are fully executing and complying with their contracted scope of work. They also need to make sure the project is being built in accordance with the plans, specifications, and local building codes.

Students are required to completed three elective courses. Choose one courses from any of the above concentrations, other than your selected concentration.

Declaring a Concentration

Declaring a concentration is a two-step process:

Step 1: Use the "Declare or Change Major/Minor" to declare a concentration following the instructions below.

Log onto Owl Express.
Select the Student Records tab.
Select the Declare or Change Major/Minor option.
This will open a form which will allow you to make changes to your major/minor.
Please allow 2-10 business days for processing your change. You can return to Owl Express at any time to check the status of your request. Some majors have a separate application process.

Step 2: Declaring a Concentration automatically updates the Catalog Year to the current year. This will negatively impact a student's degree progression record, but is easy to fix. Once a concentration is declared, fill out this form to return to the correct Catalog Year:
